Meet the Short Vowels

I can read short-vowel words by blending sounds.

Let’s get started

Read each sound, slide them together, and say the word.

Learn together

  1. Try /c/ /a/ /t/. Blend the sounds into “cat.”
  2. Try /p/ /i/ /g/. Blend the sounds into “pig.”
  3. Try /h/ /o/ /t/. Blend the sounds into “hot.”

Example to explore

c + a + t → cat p + i + g → pig

Try it yourself

  1. Which word has the short a sound?
  2. Complete the word for 🐷: p_g
  3. Write a sentence using the word cat, pig, or sun.

Hands-on project

Make a 4-page mini-book. Put one short-vowel word and a drawing on every page.

Reflect and grow
