Five Short Vowels at Work

I can choose a vowel to complete simple short-vowel words.

Let’s get started

Each short vowel makes a different sound. One letter can change the whole word.

Learn together

  1. Sound out “cat” slowly and listen for short /a/.
  2. Compare “pet” short /e/, “sit” short /i/, “hot” short /o/ and “sun” short /u/.
  3. Swap vowel tiles to build a new word and check if it is real.

Example to explore

c-a-t p-e-t s-i-t h-o-t s-u-n

Try it yourself

  1. Which vowel completes p_t to spell “pet”?
  2. Type the missing vowel: s_n (the bright star in the sky).
  3. Which word has the short /i/ sound?

Hands-on project

Design five “vowel windows.” Draw and label one example word behind each window.

Reflect and grow

Which sound took an extra try? How did you check?
