Word Chunks Make Reading Easier

I can break familiar two- and three-syllable words into manageable parts.

Let’s get started

Long words become easier when we notice their smaller word chunks.

Learn together

  1. Clap “rab-bit”: two beats; read each part and blend the word.
  2. Clap “bas-ket”: two beats. Listen for the vowel sounds.
  3. Try “pic-nic” and “an-i-mal”; blend the chunks into whole words.

Example to explore

rab / bit → rabbit an / i / mal → animal

Try it yourself

  1. How many syllables can you clap in rabbit?
  2. Which word has three syllables?
  3. Choose a long word from a book. Write it and mark each syllable or draw slashes.

Hands-on project

Create a syllable sorting board: one beat, two beats and three beats, using words from your reading.

Reflect and grow

How did breaking a word apart help you read it?
