Word Patterns Help Us Spell

I can compare long- and short-vowel spelling patterns.

Let’s get started

English spelling patterns give us clues. Compare cap and cape; the silent e changes the vowel.

Learn together

  1. Read “cap” with short a.
  2. Add an e to spell “cape” with long a.
  3. Look for that pattern in kit/kite and hop/hope.

Example to explore

cap → cape kit → kite hop → hope

Try it yourself

  1. Which word has long a?
  2. Change hop into the long-o word by adding a letter. Type the whole new word.
  3. Write another short/long vowel word pair.

Hands-on project

Create a flip-card spelling board that changes short-vowel words into silent-e words.

Reflect and grow

How did the final e help you predict the vowel sound?
