Number Match-Up: Zero to Five

I can match the numerals 0–5 to groups of objects.

Let’s get started

A number symbol tells us how many objects are in a group.

Learn together

  1. Write the numerals 0, 1, 2, 3, 4, and 5 on cards.
  2. Make a group with three blocks; count as you touch each one.
  3. Put the 3 card by your group. Try 0: no blocks belong by the zero card.

Example to explore

0 → (nothing) 2 → ● ● 5 → ● ● ● ● ●

Try it yourself

  1. Which numeral matches ● ● ● ●?
  2. How many counters go next to the numeral 0?
  3. Choose a numeral. Draw that many circles and say how you counted.

Hands-on project

Create a counting trail from 0 to 5 with numbers and matching dots. Teach a family member how 0 works.

Reflect and grow

Which number was easiest to match, and why?
